Sizing the Machine to Your Job

The most common first-timer mistake is renting too much machine — or too little. Before calling, note three things: what you're cleaning, how much of it (square footage), and how dirty it is. Then ask: "I have [X] square feet of [surface] with [condition] — what would you recommend?" A good shop answers with a specific machine and explains why.

Ask about GPM as well as PSI — flow rate determines how fast large areas get done. Our PSI vs. GPM guide explains why. If a shop can't discuss GPM, they don't know their fleet.

Questions About What's Included

A quote means nothing until you know what's in the kit. Ask these verbatim:

Also ask the golden question: "What's the one mistake beginners make with this machine?" Our techs love it — pressure washers: holding the nozzle too close; extractors: over-wetting carpet; scrubbers: running over cords.

Questions About Total Cost

The daily rate is just the headline. Ask for the all-in number:

A trustworthy shop answers crisply because the answers are on their price sheet. Evasiveness about fees is the single best predictor of a bad rental experience.

Questions About Pickup, Return, and Safety

Use the walkthrough to handle the machine while an expert watches — grip the wand, feel the trigger kick, practice swapping nozzles. Five supervised minutes at the shop beats an hour of fumbling at home. Don't be embarrassed by beginner questions; we'd rather teach for 20 minutes than deal with an injury.

Red Flags at Any Rental Shop

Green Flag (Good Shop)Red Flag (Walk Away)
Published prices, deposits, and fees"We'll figure out the total at return"
Machines tested in front of youHanded over cold — "it worked last time"
Mandatory safety walkthroughNo instructions, no manual, no PPE
Written agreement you can readVerbal terms, pressure to "just sign"
Clear breakdown/swap policy"Not our problem once it leaves"
Staff who ask about your projectStaff who push the priciest unit

Trust your gut. A shop that rushes you or treats safety gear as optional will treat your deposit the same way. The right shop is almost annoyingly thorough — that's the one you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

I've never used a pressure washer. Can I really do this myself?

Yes — with the right machine and a walkthrough. Start mid-range (not the biggest), practice on a hidden spot, keep the nozzle moving, and follow the quick-start card. Our techs make sure you leave confident.

Should I rent or buy?

If you'll use it once or twice a year, rent. A commercial pressure washer costs $800–$2,000 plus maintenance and storage — versus $89 for a serviced rental day. Renting wins unless you're a heavy user.

What ID and payment do I need?

A valid government photo ID and a major credit or debit card for the refundable deposit. Name on the ID must match the renter. No applications, no credit checks.

How long does pickup take?

About 15–20 minutes for a first-timer: paperwork, deposit hold, kit check, full walkthrough. Return is under 10 minutes. Don't schedule pickup 20 minutes before you need to start.

Can someone else pick up for me?

The renter of record must be present for the agreement and walkthrough — no exceptions. Bring your helper along; we'll walk you both through it.
