The First 15 Minutes: What to Do

Stop the moment something seems wrong. Continuing to run a failing machine turns a small problem into a big one — and the line between "warranty issue" and "renter damage" is often whether you kept pulling the trigger after the warning signs.

  1. Shut it down safely. Release the trigger, kill the engine or unplug, relieve pressure per the quick-start card. Don't keep troubleshooting a machine that's smoking or grinding.
  2. Check the obvious. Half of "breakdowns" are simple: empty fuel, kinked garden hose, tripped GFCI, full recovery tank, clogged nozzle. Run the quick-start troubleshooting once.
  3. Call us at (512) 555-0199. Our techs diagnose most issues by phone in two minutes and will tell you whether it's a field fix, a swap, or a bring-it-back.
  4. Don't disassemble anything. Opening the pump or pulling the carburetor voids your damage waiver. If it needs tools beyond the kit, it's our job.

We're open Mon–Sat, 7 AM–6 PM CT. If a machine fails Sunday when we're closed, secure it, note the time and symptoms, and call Monday morning — the downtime counts in your favor under our credit policy.

Mechanical Failure vs. Misuse: Who Pays

SituationClassificationWho Pays
Pump seal fails under normal useMechanical failureWe do — swap or credit
Engine won't start; fuel system issueMechanical failureWe do — swap or credit
Vacuum motor burns outMechanical failureWe do — swap or credit
Pump run dry (no water supply)MisuseRenter — pump rebuild cost
Wrong fuel in the tankMisuseRenter — full service cost
Machine dropped off a tailgateNegligenceRenter — repair cost
Normal wear: worn O-ring, tired beltWear and tearNobody — always on us

The principle: if the machine failed despite correct use, it's our problem. If it failed because of how it was used, it's the renter's. Normal wear is never charged — seals and belts have finite lives, and we'd rather replace a $4 O-ring than argue about it. Gray areas get decided in your favor when you've followed the manual and our walkthrough.

Our Swap-and-Credit Policy

For genuine mechanical failure, you get two options — your choice, no haggling:

What we don't cover is consequential costs — the idle crew, the rescheduled contractor. Our liability is limited to rental charges under our terms of service, standard across the industry. Build buffer time into important jobs (see our weekend warrior timeline) rather than betting a deadline on any single machine.

Documenting the Problem

Five minutes of documentation protects you completely:

  1. Photograph it — the machine as it sits, gauges, fuel level, connections. Timestamped phone photos are perfect.
  2. Note the time — when it failed and how far into the rental. This determines your credit.
  3. Write symptoms — "lost pressure gradually, then pump knocked" beats "it broke."
  4. Keep failed parts — a burst hose or cracked fitting is the best evidence of what happened.

Bring this to the return inspection. Renters who document get faster resolutions because there's nothing to debate — the conversation takes three minutes instead of thirty.

What Renters Are Responsible For

Over 98% of rentals return with zero issues and full deposits released. The damage waiver exists so the remaining 2% doesn't ruin anyone's month. Every machine also passes a multi-point service and a 10-minute test run between rentals — which is why our mechanical failure rate stays under 2%.

Frequently Asked Questions

The machine died two hours into my rental. Do I get my money back?

If it was mechanical failure under normal use, you choose: an immediate swap to an equivalent machine, or a credit for the unused time. Two hours into a one-day rental earns a full day's credit. Bring the machine back with your notes on what happened.

What if the breakdown was my fault?

Repair cost is yours per the rental agreement — though the damage waiver caps exposure for accidental damage during normal use. Misuse like running a pump dry isn't covered. We'll show you the damage and quote from our standard price list.

Can I fix it myself and keep working?

Field fixes, yes: clearing a clogged nozzle, reseating a hose, refueling, resetting a GFCI. Anything requiring disassembly, no — call us first. Unauthorized repairs void the damage waiver.

What if it breaks on a Sunday when you're closed?

Secure the machine, note the time and symptoms with photos, and call Monday morning. The downtime counts toward your credit — you won't pay rental time on a dead machine.

Will a breakdown affect my deposit?

Mechanical failures don't touch your deposit — the hold releases normally. Only renter-caused damage, missing parts, or unpaid fees affect it, and we'll walk through any deduction with you at inspection.
