Why PPE Is Non-Negotiable With Rental Gear

A 4,000 PSI pressure washer concentrates more force per square inch than a sharp knife edge. These are commercial-grade machines — stronger than anything at a home center — and capable of injecting water through skin, an injury that looks minor on the surface but can require emergency surgery underneath.

Steam cleaners bring a different danger: 200°F+ vapor that scalds instantly and is nearly invisible in bright sunlight. Add slippery wet surfaces and chemical detergents, and a rental day has more hazards than most DIY projects. None of this should scare you off — it should convince you that a few dollars of safety gear and five minutes of preparation are the cheapest part of the job. Our rule: if the manual says to wear it, wear it.

The Head-to-Toe PPE Checklist

GearWhat to GetWhen You Need It
Safety glasses / gogglesANSI Z87.1 rated; sealed goggles for overhead workAlways — debris ricochet is the #1 rental-day injury
Hearing protectionFoam plugs (NRR 25+) or earmuffsGas washers and burnishers; 85+ dB sustained
Chemical-resistant glovesNitrile, elbow-length for chemicalsDetergents, degreasers, hot surfaces
Long pants & sleevesDenim or work pants; no shortsPressure washing — deflects spray and debris
Closed-toe bootsWaterproof, slip-resistant solesAlways — never sandals on a wet jobsite
Respirator / dust maskN95 minimum; half-face with cartridges for chemicalsMold, dusty concrete, chemical vapors

The most-skipped item is eye protection, and it's the most important. A 0° nozzle can throw a pebble like a bullet, and even a 40° fan atomizes grit. Sealed goggles beat open glasses for overhead work — siding, soffits, gutters — because dirty water runs down into open glasses. And wear real footwear: wet concrete is treacherous, and nearly every slip-and-fall we've heard about involved sneakers.

Every rental kit includes safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves free, and gas machines include foam earplugs. Bring closed-toe shoes, long pants, and any respirator needs — we stock goggles, respirators, and coveralls at the counter at near-cost if you forget something.

Machine-Specific Hazards

Pressure washers: never point the wand at yourself or anyone else, and never put a hand in front of the nozzle to "test" the spray — injection injuries need emergency care even when the wound looks small. Brace for trigger kickback, especially on ladders; we recommend extension wands over ladders for high work. Electric units plug into GFCI outlets only, with connections kept off wet ground.

Start 24 inches from the surface with the widest nozzle and move closer only as needed, testing every new surface in a hidden spot. These habits are covered in your pickup walkthrough and our pressure washer rental guide.

Steam cleaners: keep a firm grip — a flailing hot nozzle is dangerous — and never point steam at skin. Boilers stay scalding long after shutdown: wait the full 20–30 minute cool-down before opening caps or loading for transport, and open caps slowly, standing to the side. Ventilate indoor steam work; humidity spikes fast. Our steam cleaner rentals include heat-resistant gloves in the kit.

PPE for Detergents and Chemicals

Most rental detergents are mild, but degreasers, mold removers, and acid-based brighteners demand respect. The label is the law — read it before you pour.

Never mix bleach with acids or ammonia — the resulting gases can be lethal. When in doubt, use one product at a time and rinse between them. And keep children and pets at least 25 feet from any active wash zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need all this gear for a small driveway job?

At minimum: eye protection, closed-toe shoes, and long pants — every time. Most rental-day injuries happen on "quick 30-minute jobs" where someone skipped the basics. Gloves and hearing protection round out the kit for gas machines.

Can I wear regular sunglasses instead of safety glasses?

No. Sunglasses aren't impact-rated and can shatter on a direct hit. Use ANSI Z87.1-rated glasses or goggles — we include a pair free with every rental.

What should I do for a high-pressure injection injury?

Go to urgent care or the ER immediately, even if the wound looks small, and tell staff it was specifically a high-pressure injection injury — it needs different treatment than a regular cut, and delays can cause serious tissue damage.

Are the chemicals you provide dangerous?

Our standard detergents are mild when used as directed, but concentrates can irritate skin and eyes, and degreasers are stronger. Read every label, wear the gloves and goggles we provide, and never mix products.

Can kids or pets be around while I work?

Keep children and pets well away — at least 25 feet, indoors if possible. The noise, debris, slippery surfaces, and chemicals make an active wash zone no place for either. Never let a child operate rental equipment.
